When lots of outsiders think of EVE Online, I'm prepared to bet the first thing that comes to mind are the stories told of New Eden's Capsuleers -- that the participant pilots that write the history of the secondary universe. More frequently than not, when people in the media report an EVE story, it is talking exclusively about the escapades of a participant or Corporation doing something amazing.
But underneath the sandbox gameplay is the fabric of New Eden -- a story of Empires and, most lately Invasions. The frame of EVE Online is based in its own lore -- something that does not get talked about enough when talking the long-running MMORPG. And he's definitely not selling the MMORPG brief. Story threads that connect players with all the universe about them are being laid years in advance -- and after 17 years in life, EVE Online knows the way to allow for the narrative seeds to be sown.
I remember being at EVE Amsterdam last year and sat around a table with some players since they discussed the Triglavian invasion in detail, questioning everything form the language to why the fact the alien race did everything in threes was significant. Players in many games frequently question and come up with notions about where a story is going in an MMO. But with EVE Online, every action a player makes may have the potential to alter not merely their particular gameplay at the moment, but spiral into something important down the street.
"I combined CCP ten decades ago," Bergur continued,"and that I combined the EVE Online team in 2014. The Drifters were really one of the first things I worked in EVE. And my type of greatest pet peeve once I began in EVE was that the simple fact that I constantly felt that, you know, you had the game -- the wonderful EVE Online world and interactions here. And PvE and Missions -- that they sort of sat outside, it did not matter that some of the articles existed out -- it did not matter that a number of the articles existed. You can kill the exact same rat , again, again, and again and it did not affect the universe in meaningful ways. So I felt just like those elements were missing form the story telling aspect of EVE."
As such, moving back to 2014, if you have been paying attention, you may begin to see the seeds of the narrative that's still going on today. These narrative threads aren't only reinforced by CCP themselves, but researched, dissected and discussed one of the community as I alluded to earlier. But even CCP get in on the action, like the Scope, an in-game information cast that discusses important story beats and upgrades from the perspective of an in-game news team.
